Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. J. L. FORSAITH, manufacturer, Etna, was born Aug. 27, 1837, in Lisbon, Grafton county, N. H. His ancestors were Scotch-Irish, and highly respected citizens of the above-named place. J. L. was educated in Boston, where he also learned the bricklayer’s trade. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in Co. H, 50th Mass. V. I., as a non-commissioned officer; served one year, and participated in Banks’ expedition up the Red river. After the war he came to Pittsburgh, engaged in gauging crude oil; in 1870 was elected city gauger, and paid more money into the city treasury in one year than anyone preceding or succeeding him. He was next appointed oil-inspector for Allegheny county, and served four years. Since then he has been a manufacturer in Sharpsburg of rolling-mill greases, and lamps for furnaces and foundries, which he patented; also conducted the tin-roofing business, and has large quarries in Etna, where he resides. Mr. Forsaith married, in New Hampshire, Sophia T. Parker, and they have six children, viz.: George B., Adah L., Blanche, Herbert J., Maud and David. Mr. and Mrs. Forsaith are members of the M. E. Church, of which he is trustee and steward. He is a member of the G. A. R., is a republican, and has filled the offices of burgess and councilman of Etna.
