Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. Warner & Co.   These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. GEORGE KUHLMAN, dealer in marble and granite, post office Mt. Lebanon, was born in Germany in 1828, eldest child of John Kuhlman, who came to America in 1833 and located in Baltimore, coming soon after to Franklin county, Pa. He was a stonemason by trade, and in 1837 moved to Pittsburgh, where he contracted until 1842. He then engaged in the grocery business in Allegheny City, and shortly after went to Beaver county, Pa., where he purchased twenty-five acres of land. He died there in 1880; his wife died in 1878. He married Mary Magdaline Schoolmyer, also of Germany, and by her had two children. Of these, George was educated at the public schools of Allegheny City, and until twenty years of age remained with his father on the farm and helped at the mason’s trade, which he learned. He also learned the carpenter’s trade, serving an apprenticeship of four years, and has been a contractor for twenty years. In 1880 he started his present business on South Side, Pittsburgh, where he furnishes anything in marble, granite and sandstone for cemetery or building purposes. In 1855 Mr. Kuhlman married Catharine P. Shuring, of this county, and thirteen children, eight of whom are living, were born to them. Mr. Kuhlman is a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the G. E. Church.
