Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. BISHOP WHITEHEAD. Rt. Rev. Cortlandt Whitehead, D. D., second bishop of Pittsburgh (P. E. Church), was born in New York city, Oct. 30, 1842. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., in 1859, from Yale College in 1863, and from the Philadelphia Divinity School in 1867. He was ordered deacon by Bishop Odenheimer of New Jersey, June 21, 1867, and during three years following was a missionary at Black Hawk and Georgetown, Colo. He was ordained priest Aug. 7, 1868. From November, 1870, to his elevation to the episcopate he was rector of the Church of the Nativity, South Bethlehem, Pa. In 1880 he received the degree of D. D. from Union College, and in 1888 that of S. T. D. from Hobart College. He was consecrated second bishop of Pittsburgh, in Trinity church of that city, Jan. 25, 1882.
