Samuel D. Gibson is well known throughout Washington County as an enterprising and progressive farmer and stock-raiser. He was born August 26, 1831, in Lincoln County, Mo., and is the seventh child in the family of twelve children born to John and Mary (Hines) Gibson, natives of the State of South Carolina. Samuel D. was reared in his native county until twelve years of age, and then removed to near Steelville, Crawford Co., Mo., locating in Washington County in 1847. In 1852 he went to California, but, owing to the death of his father and five sisters by cholera, he was compelled to return to his home in Washington County. Previous to his going to California he was engaged in mining in Newton and Jasper Counties, and after returning from that State he devoted his attention to farming and stock-raising. He owns about 600 acres of land, and his farm is one of the most valuable and productive in this section of the country. In 1859 Mr. Gibson was united in marriage with Miss Rebecca Hearst, a daughter of W. M. Hearst, the latter a cousin of Senator Hearst, of California. Mr. and Mrs. Gibson have three children, Mary E., Walter E. and Wallace W. The family is one of the most highly respected and esteemed ones throughout the county.
