George Franklin Pettigrew, postmaster at Cabool, was born in East Tennessee, Bradley County, October 21, 1846, to the marriage of Edwin and Rebecca (Robinson) Pettigrew, natives of Georgia and Tennessee, respectively. The Pettigrew family were of Scotch-Irish stock, and trace their ancestors back to early settlers in Virginia. Rebecca (Robinson) Pettigrew was the daughter of Basil Robinson, a native of Tennessee. In 1853 Edwin Pettigrew left his Tennessee home in Bradley County, came to Missouri, made a home in Washington County, and there George F. Pettigrew grew to manhood. He completed a good education in the public schools in that county, and in early life followed the teacher’s profession for several terms. He then left the school-room in 1870, and engaged in farming and merchandising in Crawford County, Mo., which he carried on until 1881, when he came to Cabool, Texas County. He served in the Federal army, State Militia, for twelve months while in his eighteenth year, and afterward was postmaster at Wilson’s Mills for about a year. Upon removing to Sligo he was appointed postmaster, by Gen. Grant, at that place, and after coming to Cabool received his appointment as postmaster here under President Arthur, and has held the position over since. After coming here he formed a partnership with J. R. Farris, and is engaged in general merchandising. He was married in Crawford County, Mo., to Miss Ann A. Snelson, a native of Missouri, and the daughter of John C. Snelson, also a native of Missouri. To this union were born three sons and a daughter: Albert, Marshall E., George R. and Mabel A. Mr. and Mrs. Pettigrew are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and he is an elder in the same, a position he has creditably and honorably filled for the past ten years. He is a trustee in the New Church Building Association of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He has been city treasurer of Cabool since its organization, was agent for the Adams Express Company for two years, and is a member of the school board, being at present the honored president. He is a Blue Lodge Mason.
