Dan Merrell is a son of Alfred Merrell, whose sketch appears above, and was born in what is now Phelps County, Mo., June 30, 1846. His early days were spent in laboring hard on his father’s farm, and his education was badly neglected. After reaching manhood he learned to read and write, and at the age of nineteen years he engaged in agricultural pursuits, which has been his life occupation. In 1869 he was married to Ruth E. Tate, a native of Texas County, who bore him two children, Missouri C. and Margaret B., and died in 1880. Two years later he married Mary C. Wallace, who has also borne him two children, Hattie E. and Amanda M. Ever since his first marriage Mr. Merrell has resided on the old home farm, and is now the owner of 165 acres of valuable land, about ninety acres of which are under cultivation, and in connection with his agricultural labors he has been engaged in running a threshing machine for the past seventeen years. He is a Republican in politics, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
