Below is a family biography included in The History of Pulaski County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Richard Miller, farmer and stock raiser, of Piney Township, Pulaski Co., Mo., was born in Baden, Germany, in 1832, and is a son of Joseph and Josephine (Whachter) Miller, who were born in 1797 and 1807 and died in 1857 and 1860, respectively. The father was a blacksmith and farmer, and he and wife were the parents of four children. Richard immigrated to Canada in 1852, and at the end of two years removed to Davis County, Ill., and a year later located in Douglas County, Kas. About four years later he went to New Orleans, La., where he spent two years as a cook on a steamer. His next move was to Franklin County, Mo., and after a residence of seven years in that county he came to Pulaski County, where he has since made his home. In 1862 he was married to Miss Julia Kelly, who was born in Franklin County, Mo., in 1844. She is a daughter of Peter and Bridget Kelly, and is of Irish descent, and the mother of four children. Mr. Miller has an excellent farm of 336 acres, and has 200 acres in a good state of cultivation, and ships one car load of cattle and hogs per year. He is a Republican in politics. Both he and his wife are members of the Catholic Church.
