Below is a family biography included in The History of Polk County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

W. H. McGuire, merchant at Brighton, is the son of Michael and Sarah (Deaton) McGuire, natives of Tennessee and Virginia, respectively. The father was born in 1821, and is of Irish descent, as his great-grandfather came from the Emerald Isle. The mother was born in 1823, and moved with her parents to McMinn County, Tenn., where she met and married Mr. McGuire. After ward they remained in Tennessee until 1850, when they came to Polk County, Mo., and here the father still lives. The mother was killed by a pistol shot, in 1868, and since then the father has married again. By his first wife he became the father of five children, four sons and one daughter. Mr. McGuire came to this county a poor man, and, though he has no education, he has been very successful, and is classed as one of the first farmers of his community. He is a Democrat in politics. W. H. McGuire was born one and a half miles west of Brighton, Polk County, Mo., September 9, 1854, was reared on the farm, and educated in the common schools. He remained at home and traded in stock until 1879, when he opened a general store at Brighton, which he has run ever since. In January, 1886, he became a member of the Bolivar Hardware Company, in which he is still interested. In January, 1878, he married Miss Mary B. McRoberts, a native of Tennessee, who bore him five children: Michael, Katie, Ella, Charley and William Carl. In connection with his mercantile business Mr. McGuire is also interested in farming, and is the owner of 162 acres, with 149 under cultivation. He has taken considerable interest in fine stock, and has two fine black Spanish jacks, all being imported. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is a Democrat in politics. Mrs. McGuire is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
