Below is a family biography included in The History of Osage County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

William Nelson Hood, a farmer of Crawford Township, Osage County, was born December 18, 1854, and is a son of Felix Grundy and Anna Eliza (Anderson) Hood. Felix G. Hood was born in Knox County, Tenn., in 1829, and was a son of John Hood, who died in Tennessee. Felix Hood immigrated to Osage County, Mo., in 1852, locating in Osage County, where he owned 640 acres of good land; he first married Anna Eliza Anderson, who was born in Knox County, Tenn., in 1830, and died July 17, 1866, leaving six children, viz.: Mary Ann, wife of Charles Massey; William Nelson; Martha V. (deceased), wife of Joseph N. Lambeth; Thomas Huston; Lucinda Jane, who married H. M. Bates, and James Pleasant. Felix Hood afterward married Josephine C. Willis, nee Black, by whom he had the following children: Laura Ellen (deceased), Josephine C. (deceased), Minnie May, Emma Paulina and Lulu. Mr. Hood died October 12, 1886, and his widow subsequently married Samuel Parsons, and is still living. William Nelson Hood, the oldest son, was reared on the farm, and lived with his father until about twenty years of age. August 1, 1875, he married Rhoda Jane Lambeth, whose birth occurred in Osage County, Mo., May 16, 1853; she is a daughter of Rev. William P. and Virginia Lambeth. There have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Hood eight children, as follows: Alonzo Dow (deceased), Lee Huston, William Felix, Ada Amelia, Minnie Victoria, Eva Virginia (deceased), Amy Ann (deceased) and an infant. After marriage Mr. Hood located on a farm near his old home, and in the same neighborhood has spent his entire life thus far. He now owns 100 acres of fine land on Contrary Creek, thirteen miles east of Linn, and devotes his entire attention to farming, at which occupation he has been very successful. He is one of the rising young farmers of the township, and is highly esteemed by all who know him. In politics his sympathies are with the Democratic party. Mrs. Hood is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
