Below is a family biography included in The History of Osage County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Hugh Jordan, postmaster of Linn, Osage Co., Mo., was born in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1842, and is a son of Peter and Catherine (Early) Jordan. Peter Jordan was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in 1804, and in 1830 immigrated to Canada, entering the United States in 1834. He first located at Joliet, Ill., afterward went to Chicago, and in 1840 removed to Milwaukee, Wis. In 1856 he located on Bailey’s Creek, Crawford Township, Osage Co., Mo., where he lived until his death in 1866; he was a farmer by occupation. Mrs. Catherine Jordan died in March, 1886, at the age of seventy-three years. Of the eleven children in this family five are now living, viz.: Patrick, proprietor of a hotel in St. Louis; Hugh, Maria, wife of Thomas Kennedy; Bridget, wife of John Reynolds, and Martin. Hugh Jordan was reared on a farm, and was about fourteen years of age when his parents moved to Osage County. In May, 1861, he enlisted in the Home Guards of Osage County, and the following August enlisted in Company M, Fifth Regular Iowa Cavalry, known as “Curtis Horse Regiment,” and served until honorably discharged at Clinton, Iowa, in August, 1865, having taken part in the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Franklin, Stone River, Nashville, Atlanta, McCook’s, and also the Rouseaux raid, besides Wilson’s raid, which included the battles of Ebenezer Church, Selma (Ala.), and Columbus (Ga). After the war he resumed farming. February 8, 1869, he married Frances A. Hull, who was born in Osage County, Mo., in 1840, and is a daughter of John and Sarah (Tucker) Hull. To this union have been born nine children, viz.: Teresa F., who died in 1878, at the age of eight years; James, Martha, Michael, Agnes, Hugh, John, Ella and Brunette. Mr. Jordan continued farming until October, 1887, when he moved to Linn and established a meat market. December 24, 1888, he was appointed postmaster of Linn, receiving his commission from Postmaster-General Don M. Dickinson. He was elected sheriff of the county in 1880, and served two years, and in politics he is a Republican. He owns about 1,000 acres of land, and is one of the most enterprising citizens of the county. The family are members of the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Jordan is a member of the G. A. R.
