Below is a family biography included in The History of Osage County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Bernard Lueckenhoff, a farmer and stock-raiser of Washington Township, Osage County, resides ten miles west of Linn, and was born in Prussia, Germany, May 25, 1825. His parents were Joseph and Elizabeth (Hulson) Lueckenhoff, also natives of Prussia. Joseph Lueckenhoff was born about 1782, and in 1838 immigrated to the United States with his family, locating in Osage County, Mo., where she was one of the pioneer settlers, and was engaged in farming until his death, which occurred in 1859. The mother of our subject was born about 1794, and died in Osage County, Mo., in 1840. Bernard Lueckenhoff is the only survivor of a family of ten children. After the death of his mother he lived with his father until about the year 1850, when he crossed the plains to California, and worked in gold mines about five years. He then returned to Osage County, Mo., and October 9, 1855, married Catharine Westerman, who was born in Osage County, Mo., November 23, 1837, and is a daughter of George and Gertrude Westerman, who were early settlers of Osage County, the former of whom died in 1859, and the latter in 1873. Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lueckenhoff, of whom ten are now living, viz.: Anna (wife of Fred Meyer), Mary, Bernard, Christina, Catherine (who married Benjamin Shaffer), John, Joseph, Lizzie, Jennie (died August 13, 1877), Willie (died February 9, 1876), Harman, August and Dina (died February 10, 1879). Mr. Lueckenhoff located on his present farm in 1864. He owns 200 acres of land, about eighty acres of which are well improved and under cultivation, located on the banks of Osage River. He is one of the well-to-do and highly respected farmers of the township. The family are members of the Catholic Church.
