Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Thomas C. LeGrand is of French descent, and is a son of Abram B. LeGrand, who was born in Tennessee, and moved to Kentucky with his father when fourteen years of age. He was reared on a farm, and was married to Leti tia, daughter of John Griffin, of Allen County, Ky. They became the parents of six children: John W., Nancy A., James E., Thomas C., Leann F. and Mary E. The father moved to Newton County, Mo., in 1857, and settled on a farm. He died in 1872, at the age of sixty-two years. He was a member of the Baptist Church, and in his political views was a Democrat. Thomas C. LeGrand was born in Allen County, Ky., and was reared on his father’s farm in Missouri, whither he had come with his parents at the age of four years. He was educated in the common schools, and January 7, 1872, was married to Mary Woods, a daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Lenhard) Woods, of Tennessee, who settled in Newton County, Mo., in 1837. They reared a family of nine children, and were farmers by occupation, Mr. Woods owning 220 acres of land. He was a Democrat. Mr. LeGrand inherited land from his father, but has since added to it by purchase. He is a Democrat in his political views, and is well known and highly respected in the community in which he resides.
