Ralph Calloway Smith, farmer and stock raiser of Section 28, Newtonia Township, and the son of Randolph and Amanda (Sloan) Smith, was born in Washington County, Ark., July 21, 1855. The parents were born in Illinois and Arkansas, respectively, but their ancestors were natives of Tennessee. Ralph Calloway Smith remained with his parents on a farm in Southwest Missouri until he became of age, and then farmed for himself for a short time in Barry County. Here he chose for his companion in life, Miss Amanda Roller, a native of Tennessee, and the daughter of Joshua and Nancy (Pendergraph) Roller, who were also natives of Tennessee. To Mr. and Mrs. Smith was born a family of seven children, three sons and four daughters: Linzy, Dora, Clinton, Maggie, Aroy, Hezekiah and Ivona. Mr. Smith and family worship at the Baptist Church, and are much esteemed and respected people.
