Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Josiah C. Williams, farmer, Neosho, Mo., was born in Putnam County, Ind., September 19, 1839, son of Worthington Buckingham and Lydia A. (Lapsley) Williams, who were the parents of ten children, who grew to maturity, Josiah C. being the eldest. Our subject was reared in his native State, and received his education in Poughkeepsie, N. Y. After leaving school he enlisted, August 16, 1881, in the Twenty-seventh Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Company I; was commissioned second lieutenant September 1, 1861; was promoted to captain of Company C, Twenty-seventh Indiana Infantry, for meritorious conduct at the battle of Antietam. He participated in the battles of Winchester, Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville (where he was severely wounded in the left thigh), and in the Atlanta campaign, at Resaca, New Hope Church, Culp’s Farm (or Marietta), Peach Tree Creek and the siege of Atlanta. At Stevenson, Ala., he was for a short time in command of the regiment, from there to Decherd, Tenn., on Wheeler’s raid. During the winter of 1863-64 he was appointed post provost marshal at Tullahoma, Tenn., and served at Gen. A. S. Williams’ headquarters, First Division, Twelfth Army Corps; also at the corps headquarters of Maj.-Gen. Henry W. Slocum, commanding, at the time of the consolidation of the Eleventh and Twelfth Army Corps, forming the Twentieth, under Maj.-Gen. Joe Hooker. In the Atlanta campaign Mr. Williams served on Brig.-Gen. Thomas H. Ruger’s staff, as provost marshal, being in the Third Brigade, First Division, Twentieth Corps. After the war he returned to Indiana, and in 1866 came to this county, where he now owns 120 acres of land adjoining the town of Neosho. In 1867 Mr. Williams married Miss Laura A. Ebert, of York, Penn., and they have one daughter, Virginia Edistina. Our subject is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and has served as secretary for five years. He is senior vice-commander of Gen. John G. Foster Post, No. 137, G. A. R., Department of Missouri.
