John M. Sherwood, a resident of Newton County since 1872, has during this time been actively identified with the growth and progress of that county. He was born in Westchester County, N. Y., December 19, 1845, and is the eldest son of the six children living of John R. and Martha (Halsted) Sherwood, natives of the same State. Our subject was reared in his native county, and became familiar with the duties of farm life. After attaining his majority he went to Africa and held a position in a mercantile house in Senegal for some time, and when he returned to the United States he came West and permanently located here in 1872 on a farm. He was a tiller of the soil until 1880, at which time he engaged in the real estate, loan and abstract business, having purchased the interest of Ridgway Brothers in this business. He sold out in 1886, and for some time traveled for the Jarvis-Conklin Mortgage Trust Co. He is secretary of the Southwestern Emigration Society, and is secretary of the Board of Curators, Scarrett College; and also fills the same position for the County Fair and other societies. Emma Peck, of Sing Sing, N. Y., became his wife in 1876, and they have two interesting children: Clara and Anna. Mr. Sherwood is a Royal Arch Mason, and a member of the A. O. U. W.
