Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. James William Lansford, a prominent farmer and stock raiser of Newton County, Mo., and whose post-office is Pioneer, Barry Co., Mo., was born in Pittsylvania County, old Virginia, June 11, 1843, and is the son of Permenas and Elizabeth (Hains) Lansford, both of old stock in that State. They were farmers, slave-holders and representative people. In 1852 the father located in Fayette County, Ill., having left his native State, and died there in the fall of that year. In that county his son, James W., attained his growth. He left that State in 1877, moved to Missouri, and here settled. While living in Illinois he married, in 1864, Miss Rhoda Brasel, a daughter of John Brasel, Esq., of Fayette County, Ill., but formerly of Middle Tennessee. To this marriage were born four sons and two daughters, one son and two daughters now living: Amanda (wife of W. N. Neavils, of Texas County, Mo., and the mother of one son Elmer), Nora and Eura. The children deceased are named as follows: Charles (who died at the age of six), an infant, and George (who died at the age of fifteen). Mr. Lansford is president of the Home Farmers’ Alliance, is an A. F. & A. M., and a member of the I. O. O. F. He and his wife are members of the Baptist Church.
