James H. Hughes, groceryman, Granby, Mo., a public-spirited and successful business man, was born in Howard County, Mo., January 3, 1852, and is the son of William P. and Mary (Williams) Hughes, natives of Kentucky. The father was a prominent farmer and stock dealer in Howard County, and in 1852 started for California, but died while en route. His widow subsequently married John Kingston, Esq., and removed to Newton County, where James H. Hughes was principally reared. His life has been spent in mercantile pursuits, and he is recognized as one of the leading business men of the county. He commands a large trade, which he has won by fair and honorable dealing. He is a member of the Blue Lodge, in the Masonic order, and also belongs to the I. O. O. F. In December, 1874, he married Nannie W. Jones, who was born and reared in Neosho, and is a daughter of one of Newton County’s most honored and valued citizens. They have two children, Richard K. and Sallie M.
