Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. J. I. Green, another successful agriculturist of Newton County, Mo., was born near Covington, Tipton Co., Tenn., October 8, 1835, and is the son of Joseph and Margaret (Doty) Green, both of old Virginia stock, and much respected citizens. Their son, J. I. Green, remained in his native State until he had attained his growth, and at the age of nineteen concluded to try overseeing on a plantation in Arkansas. This he continued until the breaking out of the great struggle between the North and South, when he took a trip to California. Here he spent six years engaged in cattle dealing, returning to the East in the fall of 1868, and locating in Sharp County, Ark.; in 1882 he moved to Missouri, and settled in Newtonia Township, Newton County, where he has since resided. While living in Arkansas he married Miss Nannie Lamkins, a native of Mississippi, and the daughter of Harvey and Jane (Moreton) Lamkins, also natives of Mississippi. To Mr. and Mrs. Green were born five children, three sons and two daughters, named as follows: Robert E. Lee, James Arthur, William Luther, Louie Doty and Maggie Jane. Mr. Green is a member of the Farmers’ Alliance, and is also a member of the Baptist Church.
