F. L. Jackson, manager of the Modoc Tripoli Mining and Manufacturing Company, is a native of Indiana, born in Rush County September 11, 1848. The year following his parents removed to Des Moines County, Iowa, and from there to Rose Hill, Mahaska County, same State, where he engaged in the manufacture of barb picket fence and sale of agricultural implements, continuing at this until 1882, when he went to Kansas and tilled the soil for one year. He then came to Newton County, Mo., locating at Dayton, where he was engaged in handling stock until 1885, when he puurchased the property known as the Modoc Tripoli Mining and Manufacturing establishment, and started up the business that had been begun and then abandoned by Husband Bros., of St. Louis. Mr. Jackson was the first to introduce machinery here for manufacturing, which he did at that time. He then named the works the Seneca Tripoli Works, by which name it was known until March 2, 1888, when the name was changed to its present form. The officers are: President and treasurer, Powell Crossley, of Cincinnati, Ohio; secretary, Mannie Block; general manager, F. L. Jackson. The capacity of the works is fifty barrels per day, which is prepared for market at the works, and the product is shipped principally to St. Louis, Cincinnati, New York and other Eastern points. The works will give employment to from five to ten men. The vein is near the surface, and the average thickness is about eight feet, running from five to fifteen feet at various points. While in Iowa Mr. Jackson married Miss Serena Myers, a native of Iowa. He is a Republican in his political views.
