Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. David Sedrick Burk, farmer and stock raiser, was born in Claiborne County, Tenn., April 30, 1834, and is the son of David and Mary Ann (Dinkins) Burk, whose ancestry can be traced back previous to the Revolutionary War. The father was a farmer by occupation, and reared his sons to the same employment. David Sedrick attained his growth on the farm, and served during the last year of the Civil War in the Second Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate service. In 1865 he sold out, came west and located on his present property, where he has 120 acres, eighty in pasturage, and fifteen acres besides. While in Tennessee he married Miss Mary Ann Yocum, daughter of Thomas R. and Parkis (Berry) Yocum, both of old Tennessee families. To Mr. and Mrs. Burk were born three sons and one daughter: Martha Virginia (Mrs. G. W. Creighton), Andrew Johnson, William Henderson and David. Mr. Burk is extensively engaged in dealing in live stock, and keeps a good grade of cattle. He is a stockholder in and director of the Farmers’ Alliance, and is one of the organizers of the Milling Company of Granby. He is a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge, and of the Christian Church.
