D. F. Lee, a prominent farmer and stock dealer of Marion Township, Newton Co., Mo., was born in Lawrence County, Mo., May 18, 1842. His parents were Robert E. and Nancy (Mills) Lee, of whom the former was a native of Virginia, and the latter of Illinois. When D. F. Lee was about six years of age his father died. He was the parent of three children: D. F., Sarah Jane (who died when young) and Rebecca P. Mrs. Lee afterward married W. W. Osborn, by whom she became the mother of one child, John W. After Mr. Osborn’s death she married John Prigmore, and to them were born three children; Martha A. (now the wife of E. Yount), George W. and Rosa (now the wife of Charles Low). When eight years of age the subject of this sketch left his native county, and went with his mother and step-father to Jasper County, Mo., where he was mainly reared. He attended school in winter, and assisted on the farm in summer. In October, 1861, he entered the Union army, joining Company H, Sixth Kansas Cavalry, with which he served as first sergeant one year. In a skirmish four miles east of Carthage, Mo., March 2, 1862, he received a navy ball wound in the left hip, which has crippled him and rendered him unfit for manual labor. Upon returning home from the war, he engaged in agricultural pursuits, which have since been his vocation; his farm contains 205 acres, with 140 under a fine state of cultivation. He takes considerable interest in fine stock, especially horses, and owns some fast running horses, Steeldust and Printer, also the stallion, Coldeck. Mr. Lee is a member of Joplin Lodge, A. F. & A. M., and is a Democrat in politics.
