Andrew J. Johnson, a farmer and miner of Newton County, Mo., was born in Morgan County, Ill., December 5, 1823. His father, John Johnson, was a Kentuckian, and moved to Indiana, thence to Morgan County, Ill., where he helped raise the first court-house that was erected in that county, going ten miles to assist. He was married to Rachel Buchanan, who was born and reared in Kentucky, and by her became the father of five children, who grew to maturity. Andrew J., the eldest of the family, was reared on a farm in his native county. In 1859 he went to Phelps County, Mo., but, owing to war troubles, returned in 1861 to Illinois, where he lived until 1871, at which time he once more came to Missouri, and settled in Granby, Newton County, devoting his time largely to mining, being quite successful at that occupation. He has a good farm of seventy acres, and is an honorable and prosperous citizen. February 28, 1847, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Gray, who was born in Sangamon County, Ill., and is the mother of eight children: Harriet A. (the wife of George Thomas), Rachel (wife of E. Wiatt), Jennie (wife of W. S. Mesplay), Fannie, John, George, Dan and Joseph.
