Samuel Bloch. Among all classes and in all conditions of life are those who succeed in whatever they undertake, whether of a professional, agricultural or commercial nature. Such a one is Mr. Bloch, who was born in Switzerland, Canton Berne, November 30, 1843, and who is the son of Samuel, Sr., and Annie (Harney) Bloch, natives of the same republic. Agricultural pursuits were followed in a successful manner by the elder Bloch while living in the old country, and in 1850 he and family took passage for the United States, where they arrived after a voyage of forty-five days. They came on to Tuscarawas County, Ohio, where they bought a farm and the father tilled the soil until 1860, when he and family moved to Moniteau County, Mo., coming down the river. They located in Lime Township, remained there several years, and then in 1865 moved to Walker Township, where the father is living at the present time. He has always followed farming, but is now retired, and is in his eightieth year. He was a soldier in the old country, and served as a drummer boy. He is a successful man, and has lived to enjoy the fruits of his labor. He is the father of five children, four now living: Annie (wife of John Senn), Martha (wife of John Mishler), Samuel and Frederick. Samuel Bloch was but seven years of age when he landed with his parents in America. He grew to manhood on his father’s farm in Ohio, received his education in that State, and moved with his parents to Moniteau County, Mo., in 1860. Two years later he enlisted in the Enrolled Militia, and in 1864, in Company J, Forty-fifth Missouri Infantry, and served for three months. He was in the battle of Jefferson during Price’s raid, but was taken sick and conveyed to the hospital, where he remained for some time. In 1868 he married Miss Caroline Buetler, who was born in Ohio, and who became the mother of seven children: Louisa, Emma E., Charles, William, Malinda, Samuel and Arthur. Mr. and Mrs. Bloch are members of the German Evangelical Church, and he is a member of the Agricultural Wheel.
