Peter Conrad, the leading butcher of California, was born in Byron, Overmoschel, Germany, August 23, 1837, and is the son of Peter and Sarah (Hendricks) Conrad, both natives of the same province. The father was a butcher by trade, and also a wine grower. He owned a large vineyard, which business he carried on very extensively. He died in January, 1889, in his eightieth year, but the mother died many years previous. They had five children, three living: Fritz, Solomon and Peter. The last named was reared and educated in Germany, and there learned the butcher trade in connection with the wine business, which he followed until coming to America. He was a soldier in the German army for six years, but was released in 1866. The same year he sailed for America, taking passage on a steamer, and landed at New York City after a voyage of ten days. He came on to Belleville, Ill., where he was engaged in the butcher business for two years. In 1868 he came to California and engaged in his present business, and has since carried it on in a very successful manner. He now owns a large vineyard and makes any quantity of wine each season. He was married in 1871 to Miss Mary Klain, by whom he has four children: Otto, Amelia, Lena and Mary. Mr. and Mrs. Conrad are members of the German Evangelical Church. He is a member of the A. O. U. W., Select Knights, and is one of the leading Germans of California, Mo.
