Marion Marshall, a farmer of Linn Township, Moniteau County, was born near where he now lives, in what was then Cole County, in 1834. His parents were John and Parthenia (Smith) Marshall, both natives of Tennessee. John Marshall was born in April, 1802, and grew to manhood in his native State. He spent one year in Kentucky, and in 1831 located at Boonville, Mo., where he followed his trade of potter two years, subsequently removing to the farm now owned by our subject. He built a kiln and potter shop on the farm, and divided his attention between his trade and farming until his death in 1883; his wife was a daughter of Reuben Smith, a farmer, who came to Missouri from Tennessee when she was a girl; she died in 1862, the mother of twelve children. Marion Marshall was reared on the farm, and in early life attained his education in the common subscription school taught by Jefferson Pennington. He also worked with his father in the pottery business, and, having thoroughly learned the trade at the age of nineteen years, he began following the same, at which he worked fourteen or fifteen years. He has since devoted his attention to farming. In 1865 Mr. Marshall married Rebecca Holt, who was born on Splice Creek, Moniteau County, in 1834, the daughter of George and Lucinda (Stevens) Holt, of Tennessee. Lucinda Stevens was a daughter of David and Rebecca Stevens, natives of Tennessee, who removed to Missouri about 1815, and first located in what is now Cooper County, removing about one year later to Splice Creek, where the father died in 1851 and the mother in 1836. Lucinda Holt died in October, 1868, at the age of sixty-seven years; her husband is still living in the eighty-first year of his age. Both were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall are the parents of five children, viz.: Mattie J., John B., Robert W., Lou, and Richard H. (deceased.) Mr. Marshall was one of the charter members of the A. F. & A. M. of Jamestown, in which he still holds membership. He has held the office of school director for a score of years, and in politics is a Democrat.
