Dr. John H. Christian, of Linn Township, Moniteau County, was born in what is now Cole County, Mo., near where California is located, in 1835. He is a son of William and Jane (Fulkerson) Christian, both natives of Virginia. William Christian was born April 27, 1793, and when a child removed to Kentucky with his parents, William and Martha (Evans) Christian, the former a native of Scotland and the latter of Virginia. William Christian, Sr., served in the Revolution, and three of his sons in the War of 1812. William, Jr., father of our subject, went to Missouri in 1815, and after remaining a short time in St. Louis went to Cole County, from there to Cooper County, and in 1818 went on the first train to Santa Fe and the Southwest, where he remained until 1821. He then returned to Howard County, Mo., and sometime after worked in a distillery at Boonville, then in Cooper County, subsequently building and operating a distillery in Marion County. He then purchased land near California, where he lived until his death March 22, 1882; he was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. His wife was born in Tennessee October 22, 1811, and is still living, making her home with our subject. There were ten children in this family, but three of whom survive, viz.: John H., Elizabeth, wife of Reuben Martin, and Mary A., wife of Lewis Broyles. John H. Christian received a common school education, and in 1858 began the study of medicine. In 1863-64 he attended St. Louis Medical College, and in March of the latter year began the practice of his chosen profession at Jamestown, where he has ever since been actively engaged, but has devoted the greater part of his attention to farming since 1874, on account of ill health. In 1866 Dr. Christian married Louisa A. Smith, daughter of Thomas E. and Jane A. Smith. She was born in January, 1846, and is the mother of two children, John and Charles. Dr. and Mrs. Christian are consistent members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which he is an elder. In politics his sympathies are with the Democratic party.
