Dr. Jack T. Smith, one of the oldest practicing physicians of Jamestown, Mo., was born within three miles of that place, in 1843. His parents were Thomas B. and Jane A. (Pettigrew) Smith, the former of whom was born in North Carolina in 1815. Thomas E. Smith was fifteen years of age when he located in Moniteau County, Mo., with his parents. In 1841 he removed to a farm three and a half miles north of Jamestown, where he lived until 1876, and then removed to another farm nearby. He is now living with our subject. Jane A. Pettigrew was born in Moniteau County, Mo., in 1821, and died in 1876, leaving two children, Jack T. and Louisa A., wife of John H. Christian, of Moniteau County. The paternal grandfather of our subject was Edwin Smith, a native of North Carolina, who immigrated to Missouri in 1830, and located near Jamestown, in Moniteau County, where he lived until his death, in 1833. He was the father of eight children, but two of whom now survive: Thomas E. and Elizabeth J., wife of G. W. Pettigrew, of Vernon County, Mo. The maternal grandfather of Dr. Smith was Mathew Pettigrew, who came to Missouri in 1817. Jack T. Smith was reared in his native county, receiving a good common-school education. When eighteen years of age he engaged in teaching school in his own district, and was so employed for four years. He began the study of medicine while teaching, and in 1867 graduated from the Missouri Medical College. The following year he began the practice of his chosen profession in Jamestown, where he has ever since been actively engaged, and is now one of the oldest practitioners. In 1868 Dr. Smith married Helen W. Fowler, of Illinois. This union has been blessed with five children, only three of whom are living, viz.: Joseph N., Jack T. V. and Jessie E. Those deceased are George F. and an infant. Mrs. Smith is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Dr. Smith belongs to the A. F. & A. M., and also the McDowell Medical Society.
