Carl Gulich, editor and proprietor of the Deutsche Zeitung at California, Mo., was born in North Jutland, Denmark, May 19, 1836, his parents being Carl L. and Henrietta Eleanor (nee von Reventlow) Gulich, the former a native of Denmark and the latter of Germany. The father was a farmer by occupation, and in 1853 immigrated with his parents to America, taking passage on a sailing vessel at Hamburg, and landing at New York City after a three months’ ocean voyage. They located in Oneida County, near Eureka, N. Y., where they purchased a farm, and the father is still living. Their children are: Sophia, Otto, Oscar, Ida, Gustave and Carl. The latter was reared on a farm in Denmark until seventeen years of age, and there received the principal part of his education. After coming to America he resided with his father for a few years, and the following twenty-two years were spent as a traveling salesman for different firms, but tiring of this calling he, in 1881, came to California and established the Deutsche Zeitung on the 1st of May, 1888. The paper has a large circulation, and is one of the bright and ably edited papers of the county. On coming to the county he purchased a farm, and for a number of years was engaged in tilling the soil. He is quite an extensive traveler, and has crossed the ocean eleven times, and has visited all parts of the old country. He married, in 1870, Miss Clara L. Koeppel, a native of Germany.
