Below is a family biography included in The History of Moniteau County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. C. G. Ely, dentist, of Tipton, Mo., has been a resident of Moniteau County for twenty-three years. He was born in Knox County, State of Ohio, and is the son of A. F. and Rebecca Ely, natives of Pennsylvania. The father was a carpenter and builder by occupation, came to Moniteau County, Mo., in 1880, and died in Tipton seven years later at the age of seventy-one. The mother is now a resident of Topeka, Kan. Their son, C. G. Ely, was educated in the common district school and finished at a select school. In 1864 he enlisted in the Third Ohio Cavalry, Company H, and served one year; was in the battle of Selma and was in Wilson’s Cavalry Company until the close of the war. He was mustered out in 1865, and returned to Ohio, where he remained a short time, and then moved to Tipton, Iowa, where he studied dentistry, and where he remained until 1866, after which he moved to California, Mo. He practiced at that place for three years, and then moved to Tipton, where he has ever since remained engaged in the practice of his profession. He was married in 1868 to Miss Carrie Wilson, a native of Ohio, and the daughter of David Wilson. This wife died in 1880, and was the mother of these children: Clinton Delano, who died at the age of eighteen years; Charles, died at the age of nine months; Carlton, now at home; Harry, at home, and Carrie, who died in infancy, Mr. Ely was married the second time to Mrs. Sarah Stetter, nee Snodgrass, a daughter of Isaac Snodgrass, and to this union one son, Roscoe Conkling, was born. Dr. Ely and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and he takes an active part in church matters. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., and is also a member of the A. O. U. W. He has held various town offices, viz.: Mayor, alderman, was the nominee for county clerk in 1880, and ran ahead of his ticket. He was the Republican nominee for sheriff and collector in 1886. Dr. Ely is well known throughout the county, and is esteemed and respected by all.
