Anthony G. Hickman, a retired farmer of Moreau Township, was born in Logan County, Ky., in 1816, and attained his majority on a farm. Owing to a dearth of money in his father’s family, he was compelled to remain from school to assist on the farm, and on account of his father’s inability to work the care of the family fell mainly on his shoulders. In 1839 he came with his wife and one child, his father and step-mother to Missouri, and located on the farm where he now lives, which originally consisted of 160 acres, but which he afterward increased to 750 acres, a considerable portion of which he has given to his children. March 10, 1836, he was married, in Kentucky, to Miss Susan Clark, who was born in the State, June 23, 1817, and died, March 8, 1854, having borne a family of six children, five of whom are living: George, John, Joseph, Newton, and Mary, wife of Charles Stevens. An infant died with its mother. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr. Hickman took for his second wife Isabel Finley, who was born November 24, 1830, and died March 10, 1861, a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He married his present wife (who was born May 3, 1832) June 6, 1861. Her maiden name was Harriet McClanahan, and she is also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Hickman made a profession of religion when a young man, and has since been an active worker for the cause of Christianity. He has served as justice of the peace, and has been a member of the A. F. & A. M., Tipton Lodge, since 1861.
