Adolph Klatt, a farmer and wagon-maker of Moniteau County, was born in Poland in 1852, and is a son of Gotleib and Wilhelmina (Wajahn) Klatt, also natives of Poland. The father was born in 1813, and was a school-teacher by profession, which he followed in his native country about thirty years, in that time having charge of two different schools, with nearly one hundred pupils under his charge. He taught school until his death, in Poland, in May, 1871. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, and an active worker in the Sunday-school. The mother was born in 1812, and lived in Poland until 1882, when she immigrated to America with her daughter, and lived with our subject until 1888, since which time she has lived in St. Louis with her daughter. To the parents of our subject nine children were born, but four of whom are now living, viz.: Ernest, living in Schell City, Mo.; Otto, in Howard County, Mo.; Amelia Milgaskie, living in St. Louis, and Adolph. The latter received his education in the country of his birth, where he learned the wagon-maker’s trade. At the age of nineteen he left Poland for Liverpool, England, where April 17, 1871, he set sail for America on the “City of London,” landing in New York on the 27th of the same month. From there he went to Quincy, Ill., where he remained but a short time. From Quincy he went to Boonville, Mo., where he worked in a potter’s shop until 1873, when he went to St. Louis, and for several years was there employed at his trade of wagon-maker. He subsequently became foreman in a large livery barn, and in 1877 he located on his present farm in Linn Township, Moniteau County, where he has since lived. In 1878 Mr. Klatt married Wilhelmina E. Stock, who was born in Moniteau County, March 10, 1860, and died in 1885, leaving a family of five children, viz.: George, Karl, Otto, Ammel and Ernest (deceased); the last two were twins. Mr. Klatt next married Louisa Holtzforster, who was born in Ohio, August 10, 1855, and when a child removed to Missouri with her parents, who located in California, Moniteau County, where the father died in 1861 and the mother in 1864; both were members of the Lutheran Church, and their five children are Minnie, Louisa, John, Henry and Mary. Mr. Klatt has one child, Edith, by his second marriage. The parents are active members of the Lutheran Church. Mr. Klatt is one of the most successful and enterprising farmers of the township. He is a member of the A. O. U. W. of Big Lick, Cooper County, and in politics is independent.
