A. M. Clark, a successful farmer and stock-trader of Moniteau County, Mo., and the son of Ezekiel and Mary Ann (Miller) Clark, was born in Knox County, Ohio, September 11, 1819. The parents were natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio, respectively, and were married in the last named State. The father was a farmer by occupation, and also carried on the carpenter business. He afterward moved to Marion County, Ohio, where he resided up to 1837, and then moved to Missouri, and settled in what is now Morgan County. He resided here until 1847, when he moved to Iowa, and three years later went to the State of California, where he died in 1850. He left his family in Iowa. A. M. Clark was eighteen years of age when he came to Missouri with his parents, and was the eldest of seven sons and one daughter, all of whom grew to mature years, but the only ones surviving now are the subject of this sketch and three brothers. One brother, S. V., is a resident of St. Louis, Mo.; William P. resides in Iowa, and David is a resident of Montana. A. M. Clark resided with his parents until his majority, and was married in Morgan County, Mo., September 22, 1840, to Miss Mary J. Chapman, a native of Kentucky, and the daughter of William Chapman (deceased). After marriage Mr. Clark settled on a tract of raw land in Morgan County, and in 1850 he moved to Moniteau County, and has since been a resident of the same. He came to his present farm in the spring of 1865, and now owns 400 acres of good land. He has a valuable place two miles south of Tipton, all under cultivation, and a neat cottage residence. Mr. Clark has been an active stock-dealer all his life, or the principal part of it, as he commenced at the age of twenty-two years. He ships a great deal of stock each year, and in early days, before railroads, he drove to St. Louis, and from there shipped to New Orleans. He would generally drive 100 head of cattle in a drove, and has driven seventy-two droves of cattle, twenty of sheep and one of horses, and for many years was among the leading shippers of all kinds of stock. He has been a very active business man all his life, and although starting life with but $50, he has accumulated a competency, and can enjoy the fruits of his labor in his declining years. While in the mercantile business and lumber trade he was equally successful. He is the father of eight living children, all grown: Mary E., wife of Daniel Collier; Falinda A., wife of Jacob Shearer; William Thomas, married; Ezekiel F., A. M., Jr., married; S. V., married; James E., also married, and W. C., married. Mr. and Mrs. Clark are members of the Baptist Church and he has held positions in the same. He is also a member of Tipton Lodge No. 56, A.
