Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Dr. Thomas R. Quarles, a promising young physician and surgeon of South West City, Mo., was born in Washington County, Ark., on January 31, 1858. He is the son of William R. Quarles, a native of Tennessee, who emigrated from his native State to Arkansas in 1847, settling in Fayetteville, where for many years he was a leading merchant. Thomas R. Quarles was reared and educated in Fayetteville, and began reading medicine under the direction of his grandfather, Dr. Thomas J. Pollard, of Fayetteville. He afterward attended the Missouri Medical College of St. Louis, from which institution he graduated in 1880. In April of the same year he located at South West City and began practicing his profession, which he has continued with good results. He, however, spent eight months in Fayetteville since then as employed surgeon for the “Frisco” Railroad Company. On July 20, 1884, his marriage with Emma Pettit was solemnized. She is a daughter of Stacey Pettit, Fort Smith, Ark. To Dr. and Mrs. Quarles have been born three children, namely: Bessie, Fannie and William. Dr. Quarles is a member of Washington County (Ark.) Medical Society, also of McDonald County (Mo.) Medical Society.
