Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Dr. Marcus D. L. McCall, a leading physician, surgeon and druggist of Rocky Comfort, Mo., was born in McMinn County, Tenn., on April 14, 1832. He is a son of John McCall, a native of Scotland, who came to the United States in childhood, about the year 1796. In 1836 the latter came with his family to Greene County, Mo., where the subject of this sketch acquired a good education in the common schools. Dr. Marcus D. L. McCall went to Sebastian County, Ark., in 1858, but returned to Missouri at the outbreak of the Civil War, and enlisted in the Union army. He was assigned to Company C, Thirteenth Missouri State Militia, but was afterward in the Eleventh Missouri Cavalry, Company C. He enlisted as a private, but was discharged as a second lieutenant, having participated in the battles of Carthage, Wilson Creek and others. Upon returning from the war he remained in Benton and Lawrence Counties, Mo., until December, 1867, when he came to Rocky Comfort. Having previously read medicine he began practicing upon locating in Rocky Comfort, and in 1878 entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk, Iowa, from which institution he graduated in 1879. After finishing his professional education he returned to Rocky Comfort, and has built up a large practice. On October 14, 1854, he married Margaret E., a daughter of Newton Woods (deceased). She was born in Benton County, Ark. They are the parents of nine children, seven of whom are living, viz.: Alice, Grant, Sherman, Otis, Cora, Cromwell and Arla. Those deceased are Annie, who died when eighteen years of age, and Alexander, who died while young. Alice married James McCary, of Barry County, Mo., and Grant, who now resides in Newton County, married Mattie McDonald, and has one child, Donald S. Dr. McCall is a member of the Masonic order and I. O. O. F. Both he and wife are zealous Christians and members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In politics he is a Republican.
