Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Dr. Lyman Maynard, a physician of May, Mo., was born in Steuben County, N. Y., on November 24, 1829. He is a son of Cyrus Maynard (deceased), a native of Worcester County, Mass., who settled in Steuben County, N. Y., in 1822. Dr. Lyman Maynard secured his literary education in the common schools and Vernon Academy, of Indiana, his parents having removed to Jennings County, Ind., when he was a small boy. He read medicine under the direction of Dr. Alfred Force, of Hardinsburg, Ind., and in June, 1860, located at Austin, Ind., and began practicing his profession. Three years later he removed to Little York, Ind., and practiced until 1869, when he came to Missouri, locating in Jasper County. The following summer he removed to Newton County, and in the spring of 1881 located at May, where he has since resided and very successfully practiced his profession. His marriage with Sophia Daily was celebrated on January 25, 1852. She is the daughter of Sylvester Daily, deceased. The Doctor and Mrs. Maynard are the parents of five children: Sumner, Edith, Edgar, Alice J. and Minnie M., all of whom are married except Minnie. Dr. Maynard is a member of the Masonic fraternity, also of the I. O. O. F. and the Farmers’ Alliance.
