Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Dr. John Smartt, president of the Split Log Sulphur Well Company, of Pineville, Mo., is a prominent physician of Bentonville, Ark. He was born in Warren County, Tenn., on January 20, 1820, and is a son of George R. Smartt, a native of North Carolina, who is now dead. Dr. John Smartt received a liberal literary education in McMinnville College of his native county. After leaving the latter institution he began reading medicine, and at the age of twenty-four entered the medical department of Transylvania University at Lexington, Ky. He began practicing his profession in his native town on March 1, 1847, but the following year removed to Oxford, Ala., where he remained until 1865, when he went to Dallas, Tex., and practiced medicine until 1871. He then removed to Bentonville, Ark., where he has built up a large practice. Dr. Smartt is a highly esteemed citizen of Bentonville, and has been prosperous in business. He is president of the People’s Bank of the city, and is also president of the county examining board. Besides these he is prominently connected with other public interests, and is the owner of considerable real estate in and around Bentonville. The Doctor became connected with the Split Log Sulphur Well Company in 1887, of which he is president. The company expect to develop the property, and make it one of the leading health and pleasure resorts of the Southwest. On November 23, 1848, Dr. Smartt married Essie C. Pyles, a daughter of Lewis Pyles (deceased), and to them have been born nine children. Those living are Susan (Terry), Lewis, Athelia, Alfred and Essie. Both the Doctor and his wife are consistent members of the Old School Presbyterian Church.
