Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. John S. Fox, proprietor of a portable saw-mill, of Buffalo Creek Township, McDonald Co., Mo., was born in Northumberland County, Penn., on July 25, 1853. He is a son of Jonas Fox, of Kalamazoo County, Mich., having settled there in 1866. Six years prior to that he removed from Pennsylvania to St. Joseph County, Mich. John S. Fox received a very fair education in the common schools, and in 1877 went to Jacksonville, Ill. The following year he went to Edwards County, Kas., and in December of the same year to Colorado. He, however, returned to Kansas in January, 1879, and the following October located at Wichita. In January, 1880, he came to Galena, Kas., and there engaged in the saw-mill business; in December, 1880, he came to McDonald County, Mo., bringing with him his saw-mill. He was then in partnership with Jordan E. Fox, his brother, and the Yocum Brothers. He owns a fine “Eclipse” mill, with a T. M. Nagle boiler and engine, capacity 6,000 feet of lumber per day. Mr. Fox was married on January 25, 1882, to Laura A. Burns, a daughter of Emmons F. Burns, of McDonald County. Their marriage has been blessed by the birth of two children, a boy and a girl, namely: Charles A. and Tommy L. Mr. Fox is an enterprising citizen, and a member of the Farmers’ Alliance and Methodist Episcopal Church South.
