John A. Marshall, a substantial farmer of Elk River Township, McDonald Co., Mo., was born in Salisbury, N. C., on May 15, 1854. His father, Henry Marshall, brought his family from the “Old North State” to Missouri in the fall of 1860, and settled in Newton County. During the Rebellion he was murdered in McDonald County, Mo., by Bob Christian’s Rangers. John A. Marshall received a limited education in the common schools. He has always followed farming as a vocation, and is now the owner of 168 acres of well-improved land. He settled in McDonald County in 1868. On January 7, 1883, he and Roxana A. Peck were united in marriage, and to them have been born two children, Pearlie L. and James E. Mrs. Marshall is a daughter of Edwin Peck (deceased). Mr. Marshall is now serving as school director of his district, and always takes much inter­est in educational affairs.
