Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. James H. Slinkard, a general merchant of Sulphur Springs, Mo., was born in Smith County, Middle Tenn., on October 9, 1835, and is a son of William Slinkard, deceased. When a small boy James H. went with his parents to Franklin County, Ill., and afterward to Randolph County, Ark. Coming to McDonald County, Mo., in 1851, he settled near Sulphur Springs, where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits for nearly twenty years, and engaged in his present business in September, 1882. He carries a stock of $2,000, and does an annual business of $5,000. Besides his business, business house, residence and considerable other property in town, he owns a small farm of thirty acres. During two years of the Civil War he served in detached service in Company B, Fourteenth Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. Mr. Slinkard spent most of his time in the hospital, and participated in but one battle, that at Saline, Ark. In the summer of 1860 he was united in marriage with Sarah Ford, a daughter of Richard Ford, deceased, and to them have been born eleven children, nine of whom are living. They are William T., Amanda, James F., Lydia A., Albert W., Mary J., Jacob E., Sarah C., Thalie E.
