Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Hugh Lawson Walker, a substantial farmer of McDonald County, Mo., residing on a farm of 150 acres of fine land in Elk River Township, was born in Barry County, Mo., on May 1, 1847. He is a son of Robert Walker, a native of Rhea County, Tenn., who came to McDonald County in 1842. Seven years later he went overland to California, leaving his family in McDonald County. He remained in the far West, engaged in gold mining, until 1851, when he returned to his family. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate army under Captain Hendricks, in the Stand Watie regiment, and was killed by Federal scouts while at home on furlough. Hugh L. Walker also served in the Confederate army a short time. He joined no company, but attached himself to a militia of old men and boys, who armed without a commander for self protection. Mr. Walker’s marriage with Mahala Browning was celebrated on February 23, 1879, and to them have been born one child, whose name is Thomas B. Mrs. Walker is a daughter of Alex. Browning (deceased). Mr. Walker devotes his whole attention to his farm and private affairs, and has never sought official honors.
