George R. Shields was born in Blount County, Tenn., May 3, 1833, and is a son of Robert Shields, a native of Pennsylvania, who brought his family to McDonald County, Mo., from East Tennessee in 1846, and settled on the farm which George R. Shields now occupies. Here the latter was reared and educated. Although he attended the best schools of the neighborhood, his educational advantages were very meager. He early engaged in farming, which has been his life vocation. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate army three years as a member of Company H, Seventh Missouri Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the battles of Prairie Grove and Helena. At the battle of Helena he was wounded, after which he was taken prisoner. His marriage with Anna M. Testerman, a daughter of Jacob Testerman (deceased), was celebrated in February, 1856, and to them have been born nine children, of whom seven are living. They are John W., Cynthia A., Robert J., Elizabeth, Lydia J., Sarah L. and George R. Mr. Shields is the owner of 235 acres of land. He devotes his whole attention to farming and stock-raising, and has never sought official honors.
