W. Spohn, farmer, was born near Dayton, Ohio, June 16, 1833, and is a son of Elias and Mary (Kellar) Spohn, natives of Maryland. They immigrated to Montgomery County, Ohio, and settled near Dayton in 1816, being among the earliest settlers of that region. They purchased a farm, and here the father lived until his death, which occurred when he was nearly ninety years of age. He served in the War of 1812, was at the battle of Baltimore, and was present at the death of Gen. Ross. Of the nine children born to his marriage W. Spohn is the youngest. He was educated near Dayton, and when seventeen years of age he was apprenticed to the cabinet-making trade, and served his time. He worked at his trade until coming to Missouri, since which time he has been engaged in agricultural pursuits. Previous to coming to Missouri he lived one year in Greene County, Ohio, and sixteen years in Logan County, of the same State. In 1870 he came to Laclede County, Mo., purchased a farm, and here he has since resided, near Lebanon, engaged in stock raising in connection with his farming interests. He owns ninety acres of land, nearly all under cultivation, and has one of the best small farms in Laclede County. He was married in 1855 to Miss Victoria Sharp, a native of Logan County, Ohio, and they became the parents of six children, five now living: Clara, Myrtie, Chase, Justin and Ernest.
