James C. Coffman, farmer and stock raiser of Laclede County, Mo., was born in East Tennessee, on the 11th of January, 1845, his parents being Abner L. and Sarah (Couch) Coffman. He is one of five surviving members of a family of ten children, whose names are as follows: Rachel E. (the wife of A. Lorance), Fernando, Ella (wife of G. B. Gustin) and Houston C. James C. Coffman immigrated to Laclede County, Mo., in 1851, where he has since made his home, and has become one of the prosperous tillers of the soil. In 1863 he espoused the Union cause, enlisting as corporal in the Sixteenth Missouri Cavalry, Company F, and served until the close of hostilities, being mustered out on the 3d of July, 1865. In December, 1870, he was married to Miss M. A. Howard, a daughter of John and Becky (Rouff) Howard, who were natives of Pennsylvania, and immigrated to Laclede County, Mo., in 1866. Mr. Coffman and wife have become the parents of nine children: Rudolph, Ulus, Eugene, Ernest, Effie and Ella. Those deceased are James, John and Mary. Mr. Coffman is a member of the A. F. & A. M., and in his political views is a Republican. He and family attend the Methodist Church.
