George Wood, a farmer residing in Osage Township, Laclede Co., Mo., was born in Warren County, Ky., January 25, 1824, being a son of George and Winnie (Lawny) Wood, natives of Virginia and North Carolina, respectively. They were among the early pioneers of Kentucky, and became the parents of nine children, the father dying in 1855, and the mother in 1882. The father was a shoemaker by trade. George Wood, their son, received a common-school education in his native county, and while still residing there was married in 1855 to Miss Mary M. Downey, a native of Kentucky, and a daughter of Abram and Patsey Downey. Mr. Downey was the father of seven children, a farmer by occupation, and has been dead for many years. Soon after his marriage Mr. Wood came to Laclede County, Mo., and purchased 240 acres of land, forty acres of which were cleared. He now owns 360 acres of land, 200 acres of which are cleared and in cultivation, and for the past thirty years he has been extensively engaged in rearing cattle, horses, hogs and sheep. He and wife became the parents of eleven children, two of whom are deceased. Those living are Martha E. (wife of William Owens), Carter (married to Lydia Edwards), Thomas, Jane, David W., Eli, Charley, Alice, Mary and Frank. Winnie A. and Abram died while young. Mr. and Mrs. Wood are members of the United Baptist Church, and he is a Democrat politically, and has served many years as a member of the school board.
