WILLIAM H. WEST, the subject of this sketch, so favorably known throughout Jasper county, especially among the milling fraternity, was born in Nashville, Tennessee, January 11, 1880. In the spring of 1850 he moved to Springfield, Illinois, where he enlisted in the Federal army from 1862 to June 17, 1865. He was married February 14, 1854, to Eliza J. Wiles, who was born near Dover, LaFayette county, Missouri. The children are Robert J., Fannie L., Walter M., Charles E., Elizabeth B., Willie May, and Grace E. Both Mr. and Mrs. West are members of the M. E. Church of Carthage. He is a Mason. He began the milling business at Springfield, Illinois, and is by trade a mill-wright, having built several of the Jasper county mills. Mr. West is a gentleman of integrity, public enterprise, and above all a man of sterling Christian character.
