Below is a family biography included in The History of Jasper County, Missouri published by Mills & Company in 1883.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

HUGH VINCENT HUGHES, born in Harrison county, Va., March 31, 1825, removing with his father to Muskingum county, Ohio. His grandfather, Elias, went to Ohio in 1796, settling on a grant of 1,000 acres given for services in the Revolutionary War, in which he participated, as well as the Indian wars. He died in 1844 and was buried with the honors of war. He was the father of fourteen children and known to be one hundred and fifteen years old at his death, having voted for every president up to 1844. Jonathan, the father of Hugh, is ninety years old and in good health. The subject of this sketch was married first in Franklin county, Mo., in March, 1854, to Matilda Everett, who died in April, 1855, leaving one child, Hugh. He was married again in the same county, in April, 1866, to Mrs. Mary Mansfield, who was born in Kentucky and raised in Mississippi. Her children are Edward, James, and William, by her first husband, and Jonathan and Clarinda by Mr. Hughes. Mr. Hughes came to St. Louis in 1850, engaging in bridge building for the Missouri Pacific R. R. In 1859 he came to Granby, Mo., from California, and enlisted in the One Hundred and Seventy-eighth Ohio Infantry. After the war he came to St Louis and re-engaged in bridge building, coming to Jasper county in 1876. He owns a nice farm on Spring River, with a young orchard started. He was at the battle of Carthage, and to many of the early scenes of the county he was an eye witness. Mr. Hughes resides three miles northwest of Carthage, and is improving his farm and establishing a good home.
