Below is a family biography included in The History of Jasper County, Missouri published by Mills & Company in 1883.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DAVID WALTER JONES (deceased), attorney at law, was born at Myrthur Tidwill Wales, in 1815. During his infancy he immigrated with his parents to America and located at Uniontown, Pa. Our subject remained there until about sixteen years of age, during which time he received a liberal education. He then went to Mineral Point, Wis., and engaged as clerk in a land office at that place, and at the same time commenced the study of law. Shortly after he was commissioned paymaster general in the Black Hawk War, with rank as colonel, and continued in that position until the close of the trouble with the Indians. About the year 1836 he was admitted to the bar at Mineral Point, and he commenced the practice of his profession at that place. In the fall of 1852 he was elected Secretary of State of Wisconsin, and held that position continuously for sixteen years. He then returned to Mineral Point and resumed the practice of his profession, and remained there until 1874, and then went to Texas, locating in Terrill, Kaufman county, where, for nearly six years, he engaged in the mercantile business. He came to Joplin in the fall of 1879, and died in this city, Nov. 17, 1880. Mr. J. was married in Bullitt county, Ky., to Miss Emily, daughter of John and Amy Dunn, of that state. Mrs. J. was born March 17, 1820, and is now living in this city. Their family consisted of five children: Charles D., born Nov. 28, 1847; Alice M.; Edward W., born Feb. 28, 1852; F. D., born July 17, 1856; and William F., born June 11, 1859, died in spring of 1865. Messrs. E. W. & F. D. Jones are now engaged in the wholesale flour, meal and feed business, on South Main Street, Joplin.
