Below is a family biography included in The History of Hickory County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

J. H. Childers, attorney-at-law, of Hermitage, Mo., was born in Carroll County, Ark., in 1863. His father, Josiah Childers, born in East Tennessee, in 1818, and there grew to manhood and married, the latter event being to Miss Anna Shelton. He moved to Arkansas in 1854, and was a member of the Arkansas Legislature from Carroll County. In 1863 he moved to Polk County, Mo., and resided in Bolivar for about two years, when he removed to Hickory County, where he still resides, and is an active practicing physician of the county. His wife’s birth occurred in 1820, in Tennessee, and their union has been blessed in the birth of thirteen children. J. H. Childers, our immediate subject, grew to manhood in Hickory County, Mo., and received a good common and high-school education, after which he engaged in the occupation of school teaching. He has been a decided lover of good reading from early boyhood, and during his days of pedagoguing gratified this taste to the fullest extent. After reading law for some time in the office of F. Marion Wilson, he was admitted to the bar in 1884, and since that time has been actively engaged in practicing his profession, being the only possessor of a complete set of abstract books in the county. He gives his attention almost exclusively to real estate litigation and real estate business in its various ramifications. He is a Master Mason, and is secretary of his lodge.
