Below is a family biography included in The History of Dent County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Elbert C. Comstock, owner and proprietor of Lecoma Flour Mills, was born in Chautauqua County, N. Y., in 1852, and is a son of Asa and Eliza (Christman) Comstock, natives of Pennsylvania and New York, born in 1801 and 1806, respectively. They were married in New York, and in 1857 immigrated to Houston County, Minn., where they remained until 1867, and then moved to Dent County, Mo., where the father died in 1883, but the mother previous to this, in September, 1875. He was a farmer, a miller, running a saw-mill in New York for many years, and was an honest, upright citizen. His ancestors, three brothers, came over in the “Mayflower,” and one settled in Connecticut, one in Rhode Island, and the other in the West. Elbert C. Comstock was the youngest of five sons and seven daughters, three sons and seven daughters now living. He was educated in the common schools, and remained on the farm until after his father’s death. In March, 1874, he married Miss Kittie, daughter of Frank M. and Phalinda____, natives of Chautauqua County, N. Y. They moved from there to Tennessee during the war, and in 1872 removed to Wisconsin, where the father still lives. Mrs. Comstock was born in New York, and came with her parents to Dent County. After his marriage Mr. Comstock followed farming, and was also engaged in the mill business in 1882 with J. M. Lenox, both having an interest in the same until 1885, since which time Mr. Comstock has been sole owner. The mill has a capacity of fifty barrels per day, steam power, and was the first mill in Watkins Township. Mr. Comstock is the owner of the old home place of 380 acres, with 160 acres where the mill is, and 200 acres under cultivation. He is a Republican in politics, and his first presidential vote was for Gen. Grant in 1872. He is a member of the A. O. U. W., of Lecoma Lodge 279, transferred from Salem Lodge, and is one of the substantial citizens of the county. His father settled in the woods and improved a good farm. Mrs. Comstock is a member of the Presbyterian Church, but was formerly a Methodist.
