Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Clark County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887. Judge George H. Harter was born in Miami County, Ohio, September 2, 1833, the son of John W. and Nancy A. (Russell) Harter, natives of Kentucky and Ohio, respectively. The father removed to Delaware County, Ind., about 1840. It was there that our subject was reared to manhood on a farm, and secured a common-school education. He has improved much by self study, however. He came west in 1857, and after his marriage in the following year he returned to Indiana. He followed farming in Indiana and Illinois until the close of the war. He then came to Clark County, and after several years as a laborer and renter, he purchased his present farm in 1880. His estate of 240 acres is one of the best in the county, and is watered by a large spring lake accessible from all parts of the place, and is quite a noted resort for fishing. In April, 1858, he married Isabel, a daughter of David Hay, a Virginian, and pioneer of this county. Their children are De Wilton, Mary E. and Nannie M. Our subject is a liberal Republican, and as such was elected in 1886 as a judge of Clark County, the only Republican elected to the county court.
